Ottawa police chief Charles Bordeleau said the bus driver was arrested at the scene and taken in for questioning, but he declined to provide further details.

Investigators are still trying to figure out how an lost control and slammed into a bus shelter at the Westboro station late Friday afternoon.

Sgt. Cameron Graham from the collision investigation unit, the team overseeing the investigation, told reporters on Saturday they're exploring a number of aspects, including "human factors", the vehicle itself and weather conditions.

Two of the dead were riding the bus; one was on the platform at Westboro station, a major stop on the city's busway, Watson said.

Bordeleau made it clear while police expect to release the scene Saturday, work collecting evidence, analyzing photos, videos and data, along with interviewing the almost 90 people on the bus is going to be a "slow, painstaking process". Police were urging people to avoid the area and said roads would stay closed for many hours.

The Ottawa Hospital tweeted Saturday morning that one patient is now under treatment in critical condition, six patients are in serious condition and four patients are in stable condition following Friday's crash. The crash snarled afternoon traffic as emergency crews descended on the scene.

OC Transpo, which is in charge of Ottawa's public transportation, tweeted on its verified account, "Buses are being detoured as a result" of the collision.

"Seats (were) sort of piling up in front of me and heading towards me and very quickly (I) realized there was really nowhere for me to go", he recalled. Emergency workers immediately rushed to the scene to rescue passengers who were trapped on the upper level. "Definitely people were hurt".

The family reunification centre at the Churchill Seniors Centre has since been closed, but people seeking information about family members involved in Friday's crash can call the Canadian Red Cross at 1-855-797-8875.

The bus had a capacity of 90 people, both sitting and standing.
