  • Alberta teacher Sarah McIver returned to Canada after arrest in China

China holds zero tolerance towards and will strive to fight against anyone - be it foreigner or Chinese - who is involved in drug-related activities, Chinese analysts warned after news reports that a Canadian will go to trial in Northeast China on Saturday for drug trafficking.

China arrested Kovrig and Spavor separately after Canadian authorities detained a Chinese technology executive in Vancouver.

At the appeal hearing, prosecutors said the sentence was too light and improper, arguing Schellenberg was very likely to have been part of a worldwide drugs smuggling operation and had played a major role in smuggling the drugs.

Canada's government said a Canadian teacher detained in China over a problem with her work permit had been released and was back in Canada. It ordered the court in the city of Dalian to try the case again.

Robert Lloyd Schellenberg was tried in 2016 but his case has been publicized by the Chinese press following the December 1 arrest in Vancouver of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of tech giant Huawei, on USA charges related to trading with Iran.

At least 3 dead in Egypt tourist bus bombing near pyramids
The bus was carrying 14 Vietnamese tourists and only two of them escaped unharmed, according to Egyptian officials. However, the sector has since recovered and 8.3 million people visited in 2017 , the Financial Times reports.

According to the Liaoning High People's Court, officials from the Canadian embassy in China attended Schellenberg's hearing, as well as reporters from foreign media.

Canada's government has said it has been following the case for several years and providing consular assistance, but could provide no other details citing privacy concerns.

McIver's detention was confirmed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on December 19, who said at the time that the detention was more "routine" than the previous two cases. Chinese Foreign Ministry responded that China's justice department treats foreign drug traffickers equally and punishes them according to the law; the facts regarding the female drug trafficker have been proven and the amount of trafficked drugs is huge.

USA authorities claim Meng Wanzhou lied to US banks to get around sanctions against Iran asked to extradite the executive.

China's Foreign Ministry said this month that McIver was undergoing "administrative punishment" for working illegally.
