Elizabeth Warren stands by her Cherokee ancestry claims at rally

  • Fox News hosts mock Elizabeth Warren for trying ‘to appeal to male voters’ by drinking beer ‘Playing the gender card

Michael Bloomberg has been both a Republican and Democrat but has recently re-registered as a Democrat and says that is the party he will run for if he is to chase the presidency.

ASMA KHALID, BYLINE: Hey, Michel. Scott Brown in 2012, and legislation she passed that will drastically lower the cost of hearing aids.

"I will give you a million dollars to your favorite charity, paid for by Trump, if you take the test and it shows you're an Indian".

Speaking to a crowd of cheering supporters in Council Bluffs, Warren continued underscoring her message against corruption and targeting her message to middle class voters.

The events were not without hiccups ― Warren's mic cut out for five minutes during her Council Bluffs event, and the candidate was beginning to lose her voice by midday Saturday.

But by the end of a day of public speeches and private meetings during her Iowa debut, Warren made clear her campaign will be built upon the twin themes of economic fairness and government stripped of money's influence. Elizabeth Warren will never be able to catch a break from being grilled about her presumed Cherokee heritage. "Today a minimum wage job will not keep a momma and a baby out of poverty". "And what I've found is terrifying: these aren't cracks families are falling into, they're traps".

KHALID: And, Michel, really that is kind of the crux that we've been hearing from her in Iowa. "I don't have any power to do that", she added as an audience member yelled out, "Yes, you can!" She wants "to strengthen our unions, our workers and our consumers" while breaking the hold of an "army of lobbyists" occupying the capital, as she describes it, under the banners of "big corporations".

In Iowa, Warren said her childhood in Oklahoma shaped her populist economic views. And the two of them have had some notable scuffles, particularly on Twitter. It was the first time Warren mentioned Trump by name while stumping in Iowa, and she quickly returned to her campaign message, one that advocates a "level playing field" for all Americans. Taking the mic at the crowded Orpheum Theater, she asked Warren why she took a DNA test to prove her Native American ancestry after Trump called it into question.

"Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong", Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. And I like that, retired Sioux City teacher Colleen Sernett-Shadle said.

Neither woman had heard about the "likability" flap, though Wertz smilingly proclaimed Warren "a very likable person".

'I am not a citizen of a tribe, ' Warren told voters in Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday. "Tribes - and only tribes - determine tribal citizenship, and I respect that difference".

'My decision was to put it all out there, ' Warren said. "Anybody can look at it", she said. I can't stop him from hurling racial insults. But was this an unusual approach for her? Billionaires including environmentalist Tom Steyer and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg are considering runs, and Steyer plans to visit Iowa on Wednesday.

MARTIN: We only have a couple of seconds left, though. In spite of her high profile, she sat at just 8 percent support among likely Iowa caucus-goers in a CNN poll last month, behind Joe Biden (32 percent), Bernie Sanders (19 percent), and Beto O'Rourke (11 percent).

"I think Iowa caucusgoers will be going for a candidate who is more progressive than they've ever nominated", he said.

The questioner, though, seemed less concerned about the offense the test caused to some Native Americans than its potential to fuel President Donald Trump's attacks.
