  • HTC reveals Vive Cosmos a new VR headset with inside-out tracking

HTC revealed two new VR headsets during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) yesterday, with the first being Vive Cosmos, pitched as a standalone device made for home or mobile use. A visual technique known as "foveated rendering" is leveraged to render sharp images around wherever the human eye is focused on during a virtual scene, and correspondingly reduces the image quality around the peripheral vision. The company introduced on all-new Vive Pro Eye at the ongoing CES 2019. HTC did not disclose pricing for any of these new announcements.

VIVE is a first-of-its-kind virtual reality platform, built and optimized for room-scale VR and true-to-life interactions.

The ultra high-end Vive Pro also got some love thanks to a new improved version called the Vive Pro Eye which features native eye-tracking capability. There's still a whole lot of questions to be asked about the VIVE Cosmos, and it's unclear when those questions will get answered. HTC has said that it can also be connected to a smartphone and the teaser video in their official tweet suggests the same.

We don't know if the Vive Cosmos will ship ready for untethered use or it will reply on the "ever-increasing suite of modular customizations", mentioned in an email to HEXUS, for such functionality. That doesn't mean it can't be used for VR gaming and apps, of course, and we could see some nifty interactive content roll out thanks to the Pro Eye. No, as Tobii eye tracking and many others have already begun to prove with their own ocular devices, eye tracking is a quick and easy way of interacting with software: such as navigating menus or interacting with games. The VR headset essentially integrated eye tracking natively and will allow businesses and developers greater accessibility and better training simulations.

How seriously should Jurgen Klopp take Wolves in the FA Cup?
Sergio Aguero has feasted on Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium and once again the Reds had no answer to City's lethal finisher. Guardiola said: "Losing to Liverpool we would have been nearly out and we played knowing we were in or we were out".

In a report by RoadtoVR it is claimed that HTC confirmed Vive Cosmos Will Support OpenVR/SteamVR.

This is huge, because with the current status of VR content, once you're done playing games like Superhot VR, Moss in VR, and Fallout 4 VR, it often feels like there's not much left to do.

That said, it's odd to see eye-tracking siphoned off to its own Vive headset model and not included with the Vive Cosmos - especially if the Vive Cosmos is a PC/mobile hybrid of sorts. This will become available on April 5. More info will be available "in the coming months", according to the company.
