Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Says She Will Run For President In 2020

  • Tulsi Gabbard first Hindu and American Samoan member of Congress says she'll run for president in 2020

"I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", Gabbard, a liberal 37-year-old Iraq War veteran as well as the first Hindu and first Samoan-American elected to the US Congress, told CNN.

Gabbard's announcement comes after the progressive congresswoman was the headline speaker at a December meet-and-greet with Democrat activists in Exeter, New Hampshire, where she told local reporters that a White House bid was on the table.

"I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", CNN quoted Gabbard as saying in a pretaped interview for "The Van Jones Show".

Obama, now the elder statesman of the Democratic party has not endorsed Gabbard or Harris or any one of the 15 or more Democrats considering a presidential run, to go up against President Donald Trump in 2020.

Gabbard, 37, arrived in Congress six years ago after an underdog campaign for Hawaii's mostly rural 2nd District.

Gabbard says she will run on a platform that includes criminal justice issues and climate change, but she tells CNN that America's ongoing wars will be her central focus.

Gabbard served in a field medical unit of the Hawaii Army National Guard in a combat zone in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 and was later deployed to Kuwait.

N Korea’s Kim, China’s Xi discussed how to ‘jointly steer’ denuclearisation talks
The president said he hopes denuclearization will be sped up by the declaration of an official end to the Korean War. Kim's fourth visit to China comes ahead of a much-anticipated summit with U.S. president Trump later this year.

Gabbard certainly poses a thorny problem for the neocon-neoliberal axis, as she checks all the identity politics boxes - the first Hindu member of Congress, a woman, a veteran - and she has undeniable populist appeal, given her anti-establishment record.

Gabbard made headlines in 2016 by quitting a leadership post at the Democratic National Committee over the party's decision to limit the number of debates between Clinton and Sanders, with analysts believing fewer debates benefited Clinton. She said she sat down with Assad in an attempt to end the civil war in Syria.

She has also courted controversy by picking a fight with Hawaii Sen. A source close to Gabbard confirmed to CBS News that she is running.

She's also got a chance to be a strong candidate.

Gabbard's spat with Hirono is just the latest incidence of her alienation from establishment Democrats. That led to more critical attention to Gabbard's foreign policy views, though a few months into the Trump administration, she rejected praise from the president and his allies.

Ms Gabbard was born in American Samoa in 1981. Her participation in the race will raise the profile of some important issues, for which libertarians should be glad.
