Graham said Trump was "thinking long and hard about Syria and how to withdraw the forces" after ensuring that ISIS is destroyed, that US-allied Kurdish forces are protected and that "Iran doesn't become the big victor of our leaving". "I campaigned against the NEVER ENDING WARS, remember!", he concluded in the third tweet. "We're not talking about vast wealth".

"But we want to protect the Kurds, nevertheless, we want to protect the Kurds", he continued. "Just doing what I said I was going to do!", he wrote.

Graham told reporters that Trump was committed to making sure Turkey did not clash with the Kurdish YPG forces once U.S. troops leave Syria, and was assuring the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally that it would have a buffer zone in the region to help protect its own interests.

Graham said he knew Trump was "frustrated" by his limited options in Syria.

Trump also added that it's "possibly true" that a "very small percentage" of ISIS may come to the United States if we stop fighting them on their turf.

Trump also responded to questions about the U.S. decision to withdraw from northern Syria.

A senior Republican senator said he would try to persuade Donald Trump at a White House lunch on Sunday to reconsider his order for a total USA military pullout from Syria.

In the past, Trump has said he has great admiration for the Kurds, describing them as great fighters.

President Donald Trump said that as the USA withdraws from northern Syria it would continue to protect YPG terrorists despite reports of oil sales to Iran being carried out by the group.

"They can do what they want there, frankly", Trump said of Iran's presence in Syria. "ISIS is being dealt one brutal defeat after another", he said at a rally in Florida.

'I campaigned on getting out of Syria and other places.

The Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) had confirmed earlier that they were evacuating the town, which they seized from the Daesh terrorist group in 2016.

President Donald Trump Monday, in a series of tweets, defended his decision to pull troops out of Syria, claiming that if anyone else but him had accomplished what he had against ISIS, they would be declared a "national hero".

Graham warned at the time that a reduction now of U.S. forces in war-torn Afghanistan risked "paving the way toward a second 9/11".

"He has not reversed his decision", Graham said.

On Friday, Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, met at the White House with Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, to get more clarity on the timing and other details of the withdrawal.

Trump abruptly announced in mid-December that he was withdrawing 2,000 USA troops from Syria.

Trump had earlier stunned allies - and prompted the resignation of his respected defense secretary, Jim Mattis - by abruptly announcing that the jihadists were defeated and that U.S. troops in Syria were ready to leave.
