Valentine’s Day is only a few hours away and couples everywhere are preparing for their romantic date. On Valentine’s Day, billion of dollars are spent each year, in the U.S., to express our love to one another with gifts and a nice meal.
According to a survey conducted for the National Retail Federation by Prosper Insights & Analytics, $17.3 billion are expected to be spent on this highly commercialized holiday. This year, 54% of the U.S. population will celebrate it and that is 6% less than in 2013.
Dating back to the Ancient Roman Empire, this romantic holiday has been officially established in the 6th century by Pope Gelasius I. Almost 250 years before this, Bishop Valentine was executed on February 14th for performing secret marriages.
