Valentine’s Day by the numbers

According to the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) Valentine’s Day Consumer Spending Survey carried out by Prosper Insights and Analytics, this year is expected to be a great year for retailers in the United States. As stated, the total expenses are expected to reach $18.9 billion, that’s $142.31 per person compared to $133.91 last year.

Over half of the U.S. population (54.9%) will celebrate the holiday this year, with men spending more than women for gifts, meal, etc.; that’s $190.53 for men compared to $96.58 for women. This difference can be attributed to the simple fact that men usually have a much higher salary than women.

  1. Hi Nataly,

What a cool infogrphic. Our last two kids were Valentine babies. They cringe at that LOL.

I’m not that surprised about the suicide rate. There are lonely people out there and I”m sure all the hoopla society makes about Valentine’s day might take an emotional toll on them.

I can see men spending more than women…that’;s just the way it goes…sorry guys :).

Great stuff Nataly. Thanks for sharing.

Have a great weekend and happy Valentine’s day!

    1. Hi Cori!

Glad you found the infographic was cool, I thought so too! Your last two kids were Valentine’s babies? Really? That’s funny! 😉

That’s very sad about the suicide rate and I can’t imagine being alone on Valentine’s Day and not see ourselves finding true love anytime soon! That can get someone really emotional and stressed out!

When I read about the men spending more than women because of the men having higher salaries, I thought that it’s only fair that they spend more on V-Day! That’s the way the cookie crumbles! lol!

Thanks for reading my post and have a great weekend too, gf! Happy Valentine’s Day! 🙂

  2. Very cool infographic Nataly! I have to look at Valentine’s Day in several different ways. Although I find it highly commercialized and over-rated, I also enjoy when my husband will do something for me. See my hubs is a non-romantic and non-emotional person. So any sign of “romance” is a sure plus in my books. He is one of those, like in my post on JLAFW, that feels forced to “step up” on Valentine’s Day. I’m thankful for that because it’s about the only time I get flowers. 🙂

    Love the post N!

    1. Hi Bren!

I had to change my view on holidays because my husband isn’t a very romantic guy, although he is very affectionate. He believes in celebrating our love all year ’round, not only on one day each year! I couldn’t argue with that!

This year, he surprised me by taking the day off, cooking me dinner and buying me a gift. Let me tell you, I was very surprised and happy! Maybe next year I’ll get some flowers? Lol!

Thanks for stopping by and I am glad you liked the infographic. Hope you spent a wonderful Valentine’s Day and have a great weekend, my friend! 🙂
